TALES OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA

The PNGAA has published a book titled "Tales of Papua New Guinea", the following is an extract written by Marie Clifton-Bassett from December 2001 issue of Una Voce describing the project.

How the “Tales of Papua New Guinea” was produced:

The Editorial Sub-Committee decided to undertake this project in mid 1999. After sifting through all the articles and stories from the early days of Una Voce to the end of 1999, we eventually selected about 150 pieces which we felt warranted publication. We then realised we needed some guidance as to how to proceed, so invited Stuart Inder to our next meeting. To our surprise and great delight Stuart agreed to edit the book and see it through the press ‘for a good bottle of whisky’. He recommended that graphic design, selection of a printer and final production be handled professionally by designer Moyna Smeaton, of Concept Press, Sydney.

The final selection of articles, their order in the book and their illustration was left to Stuart. Moyna, as promised, was imaginative, painstaking and dedicated. Graeme Baker suggested the photograph for the dust jacket and asked graphic designer Margaret Clift to produce it for him. Photographs were obtained from a wide variety of sources.

In the event, the book contains 60 major articles, about 20 shorter pieces and 50 photographs, one or two stories having appeared in Una Voce later than 1999. Stuart says his final selection was not made on the basis of quality, because ‘all the material was first-rate’, but with an eye for a balance over a wide range of PNG experiences.

In those circumstances, and depending on the reception given this volume, there might well be a need for a second one.

Editorial Sub-Committee members are Don Drover, Pamela Foley, Ross Johnson, Jean Mulholland, Doug Parrish and myself recently co-opted members are Graeme Baker, Joe Nitsche and Andrea Williams.

In Touch With Old Friends:

The Papua New Guinea Association of Australia, formerly known as the Retired Officers’ Association of Papua New Guinea, was formed in 1952 and was incorporated under the (NSW) Associations Incorporation Act of 1984 in March 1996.

The Association owed its genesis to the concerns of retired officers who had served in either the Public Service of Papua or New Guinea prior to the outbreak of World War II, or the Provisional Administration of Papua New Guinea immediately after World War II, or latterly in the combined Public Service of Papua and New Guinea. These concerns related to the maintenance of superannuation entitlements and retirement benefits affecting both themselves and their dependants. Initially this unincorporated body was an organisation representing the specific interests of the then membership as a whole but its role progressively expanded creating a network representing the diverse interests of all who have lived or had an interest in Papua New Guinea.

It is primarily a social organisation with more than 1300 members. The Association keeps in touch with its members, their partners, children and friends through its Journal, Una Voce, which is published four times a year. This Journal is read with interest by 3000 or more readers. Una Voce publishes tales of old PNG days, current news from former colleagues who now live in all parts of Australia and overseas, items of interest, information on PNG reunions anywhere in Australia as well as obituaries.

The membership list, circulated annually with Una Voce, enables members to keep in touch with each other.

Organisation and management of PNGAA's activities are undertaken on an honorary basis by members who give much of their time in "keeping the show on the road". PNGAA in Sydney has a caring committee that maintains contact with members who are old, ill or need assistance. There are two lunches in Sydney each year and similar gatherings are promoted in other parts of Australia.
