PETER SALMON'S COMPUTER HARDWARE & SOFTWARE

I'm a little bit of a computer freak, it distracts me from the depression of living in suburbia and complements my agoraphobia between stints in PNG.

I can't afford fast cars and women but I can afford a good computer system. I won't bore everyone with the details save to say that I'm fully optioned up with hardware and peripherals with broadband internet access through Optus cable.

I have found the internet to be particularly useful for banking and investment.

As much as I railed against Microsoft's hegemony never the less, it's software is pretty good. My other software preferences are as follows but these references are made on a "no responsibility" basis.

ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE - The one thing I don't cut corners with is my anti-virus software. There is nothing wrong with the top popular programs, they are all much of a muchness. The main thing is to ensure that you regularly update your virus definition or signature file. Don't begrudge purchasing an anti-virus program even if it entails annual renewal fees, it will be money well spent.

At this point in time I have been using Trend Micro Internet Security Pro for the past four years with no problems.

PASSWORD PROGRAM - My extensive use of the internet has generated many logons and passwords which are difficult to remember. A great program for solving this problem is ______ Log onto the web site for an explanation. The database that contains the logons and passwords is maintained on your computer and ______  does not have access to the information.

IMAGE VIEWER / GRAPHICS SOFTWARE - A great freeware image viewer program is IrfanView. The program is fast, stable and free.
