ARCHIVED FOJ ENTRIES - 13/11/01 to 6/12/03

20/6/04 from Bob Cleland:

“Walk into Paradise” - 1956 Feature Film to Screen Again

Who remembers this film? It was made in 1955, mostly near Goroka, with a bit of The Sepik as well. It’s about a patrol led by a Patrol Officer (Chips Rafferty), to confirm an oil strike in the Highlands. The female lead was French actress Francoise Christophe and District Officer Fred Kaad had a featured part. Other Goroka identities can be glimsed in minor parts and as extras. It has a Boys Own plot and lots of patrol incidents and is a lot of fun.

I’ve organised to hire from ScreenSound Australia a new print from the Kodak/Atlab Cinema Collection, and copyright permission from Penn Robinson, son of the Director Lee Robinson, to show it on a non-profit basis.

Any surplus from ticket sales after meeting all costs will go to Rotary’s Donations in Kind which collects and sends, mostly to PNG, a huge quantity and variety of medicines and drugs, hospital equipment, books, education equipment etc etc etc. Even Ambulances and Fire Engines. Over 15 years, some 300 shipping containers have gone to PNG.

I have the backing of the Rotary Club of Kenmore and full support from the Papua New Guinea Association of Australia.

When: Sunday 22 August 2004 at 6.30 pm.

Where: Schonell Cinema 2, University of Queensland (navigating instructions come with the tickets).

25/4/03 Post-Courier: Capt Peter Sharpe’s final ‘take-off’ - A MAN who has made his mark boldly across Papua New Guinea’s clear blue skies and even bluer ocean, is “taking off” for the last time, and leaving the shores of this country. Captain Peter Sharpe, MBE, a veteran commercial pilot and ocean racing yachtsman, has made his last flight at the controls of an F28 with the Bird of Paradise on the tail. After almost 30 years with Air Niugini, and 37 years in PNG, Captain Sharpe has amassed 25,000 flying hours, made 60,000 take-offs and landings, and flown about six million miles, without ever damaging an aircraft or injuring a passenger. “Sharpie” will be well remembered by a generation of young Papua New Guineans to whom he taught the skills of commercial aviation in PNG’s testing environment, as well as by passengers who were amazed to hear an expatriate pilot giving his cabin announcements in Pidgin. He learned his PNG flying skills and his Pidgin soon after arriving in Goroka from his native New Zealand, to work for the late Dennis Buchanan’s Territory Airlines. His early sorties included supply airdrops to Government patrols along remote rivers and mountain tops. Joining Air Niugini soon after it was formed in the 1970s Mr Sharpe was one of the team whose enthusiasm and commitment proved wrong the critics who said the fledgeling airline would not survive. Together they helped make Air Niugini an efficient and safe airline, serving the emerging nation. During those early years, Peter Sharpe was also actively involved in representing pilots through their union, and was elected the first and only life member of the PNG Airline Pilots Association. He was awarded an MBE for his services to aviation in 1993.

I've recently taken some photographs of Mendi and will try to get them posted within the week. Sometime in the near future we should have the photographs from the Victorian re-union posted.

Whilst away I received numerous emails from African entrepreneurs offering some fabulous business deals where a person can, seemingly pick up a few million US$ for very little effort. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to avail myself of these wonderful opportunities and am happy to pass these onto any interested readers. Caveat emptor.

17/6/02 - Have recently tripped across a good PNG photographic section within the PNG Business Directory site, click on this link Photos and Scenery of Papua New Guinea to go there, the entry titled "A walk down memory lane ... circa 1937" is particularly interesting.

1/4/02 - Apologies to past Netscape users who have experienced problems in viewing this web site, I have removed those MS FrontPage features (e.g. hover buttons) that have caused them.

22/3/02 - It's been necessary for Bob Cole to "go to bat" to defend the historical record concerning a patrol incident that occurred in the Southern Highlands in the early fifties, read the item "In Defence of the Truth" to see how easily history can be re-shaped, the termites are at work.

21/3/02 - Today's Port Moresby, a Capital being Punished, read the article that includes the quote "... a City recently described as the second most dangerous in the world after Bogota, Columbia ..."

14/3/02 - GOLD COAST PNG 2002 RE-UNION NOTICE - 8th June 2002, Southport RSL, $36 per head plus drinks, contact Paul Bolger (07) 3889 6805 for further information.

18/3/02 - I have just received news from a fellow ex-kiap that recently scientists revealed that beer contains small traces of female hormones. To prove their theory, the scientists fed 100 men one carton of beer each and observed that 100% of them gained weight, talked excessively without making any sense, became emotional and couldn't drive. No further testing is planned. FYI.

16/3/02 - Here's an interesting link, the Australian War Memorial Photographic database, search on names like Moresby, Kieta, Rabaul, Ward's Strip, Wewak, etc.

28/2/02 - Gee, they have named a coffee blend after us, royalties? a few more interesting PNG links added.

23/2/02 - this tugs at the heart strings, click on it:  dcb196207_wakunai_police.jpg (112529 bytes)   Dave Bretherton's photos are posted.

29/1/02 - Final four photographs of the Buderim reunion now posted, see Social. Coincidently, some of these last four shots are of Ross Kelly and I have just received (and posted) some photographs from Canadian anthropologists David & Dorothy Counts of Ross Kelly back in Gloucester, 1967 go to David & Dorothy Count

25/1/02 - Sorry William, I couldn't resist it:     alas_poor_muruk.jpg (39010 bytes)

14/1/02 - Thanks to my web site design mentor ex-kiap John McGregor (SmallPond Web Hosting) for the graphics and other advice (now you can see where the "green" came from. BP spent hundreds of millions to determine that "green" was a psychologically calming colour. I suppose that it also subconsciously subverts the "tree huggers").

2/1/02 - 92 World War II photographs of PNG, see David Pennefather's WW2 shots - again, thank you David.

... and in passing, Australian Financial Review, Tim Dodd - 2/1/02 "A remarkable transition occurred yesterday in Indonesia's westernmost province, formerly known by its Indonesian name of Irian Jaya. The Jakarta Government officially recognised local aspirations by formally naming the province Papua and, in an autonomy deal which operates from January 1, has undertaken to return to the local government a majority of tax and royalty revenue from new resource projects. On paper, it is a very generous offer and is set to make Papua among the richest of all Indonesia's regions within a decade or so, when BP's giant Tangguh liquified natural gas project is scheduled to be fully up and running. Not only will poverty - stricken Papuans eventually gain access to hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue each year - through a democratically elected provincial government - but also the new autonomy deal will give them the right to their own flag and anthem to let them express their identity within Indonesia ..."

25/12/01 - 1/1/02 - inebriated (and happy, time passed so quickly).

24/12/01 - Mike Edgar: Today was a very sad occasion. We heard about the passing of Marie Calcutt, wife of Robin. Marie died at her home at Kenmore, Brisbane, on 21 December, 2001. I first met Robin and Marie at Angoram, where I spent the final stages of my Patrol Officer Cadetship in 1963/1964, and I have happy memories of our time there.

We last met at the re-union at Buderim on 11 November, 2001. We have heard that Marie's funeral arrangements have been advertised in the 24 December, 2001, issue of the "Courier Mail" newspaper. Rosemarie and I extend our condolences to Robin and the other families touched by this sad loss. I am sure there will be many others who will be able to recall the happier times they shared with Robin and Marie.

24/12/01 - see Lists for DDA Staff Postings 1.1.1966

18/12/01- Wosera, Maprik, Pagwi, Dreikikir, Ambunti, May River, Green River, Rabaul, Wewak and some current shots of ex-kiaps still working in PNG, see David Pennefather's collection - thanks, Dave. Mendi is burning, this is what tribal fighting is like today, go to news item dated 20/12/01 to see pictures "hot off the press" courtesy of our SHP reporter, Roger Porteous (ex-didiman now Manager, Kutubu Transport, Moro, Lake Kutubu).

16/12/01 - Two items of humour, the Bank Customer and downsizing the North Pole.

14/12/01 - While trawling through Thomas Slone's website (see Tok Pisin) I've come across two interesting links (though there are many more).

One link concerns all our patrol reports, they have in fact been archived (I did have my doubts) see Papua New Guinea patrol reports - Melanesian Studies Resource Centre, University of California, San Diego. Yes, our names have been immortalised in cyberspace for posterity, everyone's promised five minutes of fame ...

The other link concerns information about PNG villages, see Thomas Slone's web page Where Is That Papua New Guinean Village which will lead you to the Global Gazetteer, once you locate a specific village (which will display basic geophysical information and a location map) you will notice just above the map a series of hyperlinks, try the Google for ... link. You will be truly amazed with the amount of information that is available on the internet concerning god forsaken places which you would think nobody else would know about bar yourself and the inhabitants.

12/12/01 - have moved Locations/Postings to Photographs to simplify/reduce size contents index on LHS.

Father Mihalic passed away 8th December 2001 see Tok Pisin.

11/12/01 - Ross Johnson (lapun@ozemail.com.au) has asked for all ROAPNG members to advise him of their email address, click on his highlighted email address to produce a pre-addressed email form.

Have fleshed out ROAPNG page including details of book publication project Tales of Papua New Guinea - Insights, Experiences, Reminiscences, go to the ROAPNG page.

10/12/01 - Buderim reunion pictures have been posted, see Social.

Note: Computer browser programs store recently viewed web pages on their hard drive, this is known as being stored in "cache", the principal behind this is that you are likely to re-visit a recent viewed page and by storing it on the hard drive in "cache" the computer can quickly re-load it if you re-visit the page. The downside to this is that you can end up viewing an outdated page. If you think that you are looking at an outdated page then click on the REFRESH (Internet Explorer) or RELOAD (Netscape Navigator) button in the toolbar at the top of the browser window and this will force a re-load of the page from the server where the web is hosted.

9/12/01 - The fact that you are reading this means that you have successfully arrived at our new site www.exkiap.net. In future all you have to do to get to this site is type exkiap.net in the Address bar at the top of Internet Explorer or in the Location bar of Netscape Navigator, you do not have to prefix the address with http:// or www.

Internet Explorer users can bookmark this site by right clicking on this page with your mouse then select Add to Favourites from the drop down menu. You can set your browser to go straight to this site whenever you start your browser by opening the Tools menu (at the top of the screen) then select Internet Options then in the address field of the Internet Options window, simply type in exkiap.net (again, you do not have to prefix the address with http:// or www) then click on the Apply button at the bottom right corner of the Internet Options window then close the window by clicking on OK.

Netscape Navigator users can bookmark this site by right clicking on this page with your mouse then select "Add Bookmark" from the drop down menu. Is anybody having problems viewing the web site with Netscape Navigator?

7/12/01 - Re the top left hand corner name change from kiap to exkiap. I'm quickly running out of personal web space to host the site (Optushome only allow members 10 MB) and will have to soon re-locate the web site to a commercial hosting server. In preparation for this I have registered our own domain name. Unfortunately kiap.com and kiap.net have already been registered by a Dutch bisexual (I do not jest, refer http://www.kiap.net, the audacity ...) so I've registered exkiap.net, I dropped the hyphenation to keep it simple and I went for .net as opposed to .com as it seemed more appropriate. *.com.au and *net.au names are more expensive to register than *.com and *.net so there you have it, stay tuned.

6/12/01 - For those with an enduring interest in 'tok pisin' you may like to visit the Mihalic project and join the email based discussion group (refer bottom of project page. Thanks to Bob Welsh for photographs, give me a few days to re-jig layout. Receiving good response to address listings but still many missing, keep looking through those address books.

4/12/01 - Try this interesting site PNG Virtual Library then move onto pictorial record of outstations.

1/12/01 - Try the experimental Quiz and don't forget the Message Board.

30/11/01 - Hanker to hear and read some "tok pisin", try ABC tok pisin and Radio Australia tok pisin sevis.

26/11/01 - Have received a good response to the first circular and will "spam" new addressees within the next few days. Forgot to mention that we soon hope to post some pictures of the "rugged and the buggered" from the recent Buderim reunion, courtesy of Ann Bergin per Bob Fayle. Address list updated.

24/11/01 - Found an old essay by Barry Holloway on how PNG was developed, well worth a read in the Articles section. Am toying around with some different map layouts. Have added some pro-feminine humour in the interest of balance.

22/11/01 - Have emailed ROAPNG (via Newsletter Editor) seeking their comments/consent to publish ROAPNG newsletter, membership list and membership application form.

Would like to implement a message or bulletin board where readers can post and reply to messages from others. To do this I would have to migrate this site to a more capable server. I want to run this site a little longer to assess whether it is worth the cost and effort to register our own domain name and move the site. In the meanwhile I could use a (free) third party message/bulletin board which would be at the expense of having to put up with some banner advertising by the supplier. Ponder, ponder ...

Address list updated and I have posted a brief post mortem of the recent Buderim Kiap reunion in the Social section.

13/11/01 - Having now recovered after the recent Kiap Reunion at Buderim last Sunday (11th November) with failing memory refreshed and feeling enthusiastic, I thought I'd knock up a web page which may (or may not) prove to be a useful reference point for us kiaps in the Diaspora.

I could make this a complex site by including "bells and whistles" but this will compromise download speed so for the benefit of those who do not have a good ISP link I have tried for a simpler and faster site. I am open to any suggestions.

I would like to maintain a good address list with emphasis on email addresses so that we can be easily contacted in terms of news or organising future reunions at significantly reduced costs and effort.

At this stage I've padded the site out with some of my rubbish (links, photographs, maps, humour) pending receipt of other contributions.

I would like to receive contributions from others for inclusion, it can be anything. I have the equipment to scan photo prints and negatives so if any readers have any photographs that they think may be of interest to others (e.g. recent visit to PNG, last reunion, etc.) then they can forward them to me (Peter Salmon, PO Box 740, Springwood, Qld 4127) and I will undertake to return then ASAP. Contributions can also be forwarded to the following email address editor@exkiap.net, this is not my personal email address but one I have organised for this web site).

Some kiaps are still working in PNG, primarily in the oil industry (seismic exploration, community affairs) so in the absence of contributions from others, this site may tend to expand with related items.
